OBJECTIVES: To assess the quality of life (QOL) of patients (pts) in chronic hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: All chronic HD and PD pts in the 19 centers of the French speaking part of Switzerland were requested to fill in the validated Euroqol-5D generic QOL questionnaire, assessing health status along 5 dimensions and on a "thermometer"-like scale. By combining the different responses recorded for each dimension, the instrument defines 243 health states, allowing computation of a predicted QOL value, to be compared with the value measured on the "thermometer" scale. RESULTS: Of the 553 questionnaires distributed to chronic HD pts, 457 were returned (response rate 82%). For PD, these numbers were 64, 50, and 78% respectively. The two groups were not statistically different for age, gender, and duration of dialysis treatment. Mean QOL was rated at 60+/-18% for HD and 61+/-19% for PD, for a mean predicted QOL value of 62+/-30% and 58+/-32% respectively. Results of the 5 questions were similar in both groups, except for a greater restriction in usual activities for PD pts (p=0.007). The best results were recorded in self-care, with 71% HD and 74% PD pts declaring no limitation, and the worst results in usual activities with 14% HD and 23% PD pts declaring severe limitation. CONCLUSIONS: QOL was equally diminished in HD and PD pts. Improvement could be achieved in both groups by better consideration for pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. This instrument could be used in other dialysis centers.
