Introduction - Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The impact of TB on quality of life has not been evaluated. We evaluated the feasibility and reliability of health-related quality of life and health preference measurements among patients with tuberculous infection or disease. Methods - Instruments were first pretested among 20 patients receiving TB preventive therapy. Then, after a language assessment, recruited subjects evaluated their own health using the MOS SF-36, the EuroQOL EQ-5D, a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the standard gamble(SG) during 3 interviews at weekly intervals. Results - 112 eligible patients were approached. 45 refused; 17 were incapable of completing study measurements. Of the 50 subjects, 25 were taking isoniazid (INH) TB preventive therapy, 17 had active TB and 8 had previous active TB. 18/50 were female (36%); mean age (SD) was 35.9 (12.9) years. 38 were foreign-born with mean residence in Canada of 6.8 +/- 9.4 years.Group (N)SF-36, PCSSF-36, MCSEG-5D (/100)VASSGActive TB (17)50.0 (6.7)49.2 (8.7)79.2 (20.8)78.2 (11.6)84.5 (16.1)INH Therapy (25)54.6 (4.2)53.0 (9.9)87.8 (17.9)89.3 (8.3)88.4 (21.6)Previous TB (8)56.4 (7.9)48.3 (12.4)86.2 (12.6)86.2 (9.8)97.0 (3.4)ICC, all (50)0.660.800.730.600.87Scores are expressed as mean (SD); PCS: physical component summary, MCS: mental component summary, ICC: intraclass correlation coefficient. For the correlation between VAS and SG, r was 0.42 (P<0.0001). For both the VAS and SG, the self-reported health states of patients with active TB ranked lower than those of other subjects (P=0.006 and P=0.01).Conclusion - These measures appeared reliable and may discriminate between health states in this patient population.
