Quality of life and health utilities among patients with tuberculous infection and disease.

Introduction - Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The impact of TB on quality of life has not been evaluated. We evaluated the feasibility and reliability of health-related quality of life and health preference measurements among patients with tuberculous infection or disease.Methods - Instruments were first pretested among 20 patients receiving TB preventive therapy. Then, after a language assessment, recruited subjects evaluated their own health using the MOS SF-36, the EuroQOL EQ-5D, a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the standard gamble(SG) during 3 interviews at weekly intervals.Results - 112 eligible patients were approached. 45 refused; 17 were incapable of completing study measurements. For both the VAS and SG, the self-reported health states of patients with active TB ranked lower than those of other subjects (P=0.006 and P=0.01).Conclusion - These measures appeared reliable and may discriminate between health states in this patient population.
