OBJECTIVE: To describe the perceived quality of life and functional status during the antenatal period in indigent pregnant women with HIV. STUDY DESIGN: Medical Outcome Survey-Short Form (MOS-SF) questionnaires were completed by 21 HIV-positive pregnant women and 21 controls (HIV-negative pregnant women) matched for age, race, parity, and education. Median scores between 0 and 100, (0 indicating poorest health), were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: All HIV positive patients were asymptomatic; mean CD4 count was 386. (Table: see text). CONCLUSIONS: Perceived quality of life is similar in HIV-positive and HIV-negative pregnant women. HIV-positive women report better social functioning despite increased health distress. Evaluation of quality of life issues may be important in the comprehensive care of HIV-positive women during pregnancy.
