OBJECTIVE: To validate a questionnaire based measure by comparing with an individualised interview method. METHOD: Subjects were 53 HIV seropositive gay men (asymp = 15; symp = 38: 15 inpatients, 23 outpatients). Measures: A Repertory Grid technique adapted to measure quality of life, allowing subjects to choose and rate personal constructs; (Kelly, 1955), the MOS (Wu et al, 1991), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), and a Symptom Checklist were used. RESULTS: Grid measures correlated significantly with the total MOS score, (0.66, p < 0.001), Subscales: Overall health (0.49), Physical functioning (0.49) and QoL (0.59). The Depression subscale of the HAD correlated negatively (0-0.49). The Anxiety subscale did not correlate significantly (-0.06). Preliminary content analysis of Grid constructs showed that 5 domains accounted for a third of the total: Health, Work, Friends, Attitude to life and Planning ahead. CONCLUSION: The preliminary results support the validity of the questionnaire to measure QoL.
