Three new upcoming Entry Level Testing dates are also available for men and women interested in joining OSP. On August 24, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., twenty-two recruit troopers will be sworn in before family and friends at the Oregon Public Safety Academy Hall of Heroes in Salem. The recruits will receive 24 weeks of intensive training, including the 16-week Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) training with other agency recruits and eight weeks of pre- and advanced-DPSST training unique to the requirements of Oregon State Police. A twenty-third recruit trooper hired by OSP after he was laid off by a sheriff's department experiencing budget impacts four weeks from completing the DPSST academy's training will join this group for the first four weeks of training. Governor Ted Kulongoski extended his congratulations to the soon-to-be-sworn new recruits troopers. "This is exciting to see the largest number of recruits that the Oregon State Police has been able to hire for a couple years," said Governor Kulongoski. "We continue to take steps toward 24/7 coverage on Oregon's roads by hiring outstanding candidates who will soon be protecting and serving Oregonians on our highways and in our communities." Twenty-one men and one woman were hired as part of the Department's aggressive recruiting effort to find those interested in this exciting law enforcement career opportunity. The recruit troopers range in age from 22 to 48 years and come from a wide range of life experiences and backgrounds, including eleven who have military backgrounds and one who has prior law enforcement experience. Some speak second languages in Spanish, Turkish, and French. The 22 recruit troopers will be assigned to the Patrol Services Division upon successfully completing their training at the following locations:
A twenty-third recently hired recruit trooper was hired by Lane County Sheriff's Office and had completed twelve of the 16-week DPSST training when he was laid off. OSP was able to test and conduct a background investigation prior to his pending layoff, and he was hired and able to complete the DPSST training as an OSP recruit trooper. After graduating with his DPSST academy class, he reported to the OSP Springfield Area Command office for field training before returning for the OSP-only training. Since July 1, 2007 OSP has hired and retained 94 recruit troopers. Recruiting efforts continue and have been boosted by a completely re-tooled recruitment website at www.OSPTrooper.com that was recently rolled out specifically designed to provide important information to prospective applicants, including the ability to fill out an application online and immediately email it to OSP. New applicants are required to participate in Entry Level Testing that includes a physical fitness test consisting of push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile timed run. Applicants, who successfully complete the physical fitness tests, proceed to take a written test to evaluate basic educational competencies.
