Anti-Virus procedures are an important component of BNL’s
host-based security architecture. Anti-Virus software is the
component of this architecture that provides a protection
mechanism against malicious code. Typically, only Windows based
systems are vulnerable to these types of problems. Properly
installed anti-virus software can minimize these
vulnerabilities.
All windows systems connected to the 130.199.x.x network must
be running OfficeScan. It's recommended that all laptops running Windows on
Brookhaven's external wireless (visitor's) network should be running
OfficeScan as well.
If you would like to upgrade to the latest version of OfficeScan,

Key Features
Integrated Virus and Spyware Protection - blocks viruses,
worms, Trojans, hackers, and network viruses, plus inbound spyware and
other forms of grayware before they can enter the network.
Enterprise Client Firewall - This version of OfficeScan (version
8.x) has a firewall
which is pre-configured for BNL's Networks which
protects clients on the network using stateful inspection, high
performance network virus scanning, and elimination.
Enhanced Update Feature - When clients are not connected to the BNL
Network, updates will be downloaded directly
from Trend Micro.
Damage Cleanup Services - OfficeScan cleans clients of
file-based and network viruses plus virus and worm remnants (Trojans,
registry entries, viral files) through a fully-automated process. It
also removes spyware and grayware running in memory or residing on disk,
and it allows administrators to choose which programs to detect and
remove.
Enhanced Anti-Spyware Capabilities - protects against the
wide variety of spyware, including adware, dialers, joke programs,
remote-access tools, and password cracking applications.
If you arre a BNL employee and plan to work from home, please download
and install OfficeScan on your home desktop or laptop computer to prevent viruses and malware
from making their way into the lab through your computer. Note:
TheOfficeScan anti-virus software is for official BNL use
only and is
NOT to be given out to Non-BNL employees or to be installed on
computers that will not be used for BNL-related work.
Trend Micro's ServerProtect has been chosen by BNL as its
virus-scanning product for Windows 2000/2003
Servers. This is NOT a
web-based installation, please contact
Jim McManus at
x4107 to have this product
installed on your server.

Virus Hoax Hotline from F-Secure -
Hoax warnings are typically scare alerts
started by malicious people - and passed on by innocent users
who think they are helping the community by spreading the
warning.
