Fire Marshal Division Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there a burn ban?

To check the latest burn ban information, call 1-800-323-BURN. Online, go to burn bans to find the current fire safety burn ban status for unincorporated King County, or DDES will issue a news release that will give the current status.

Prior to burning, always check with your local fire district and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (external link).

Visit burn bans for detailed information about burn bans and burn permits.

I have yard waste I want to burn. Am I allowed to burn yard waste? Do I need a burn permit?

The King County Fire Marshal Division does not issue burn permits. Inquiries about burn permits should be directed to your local fire district.

There may be restrictions which prevent a fire district from issuing a burn permit. As a general rule, burn permits cannot be issued in areas designated as urban zones. Please refer to more information online at burn bans.

Also, King County's Solid Waste Division provides alternatives to burning wood and yard waste online or contact them at 206-296-4466 to get more information.
