Up to $75,000 plus fringe benefits per year.

No research development support funds are provided.

Are competing K02 renewals accepted? No.

NHLBI requires K02 applicants to have national peer-reviewed support (funding from state chapters of the American Heart Association or American Lung Association is not acceptable).

Enough time should remain on an on-going independently funded project so that the K02 will provide support for at least two or more years concurrently with the independent support. If the K02 project period will exceed the project period of funded independent support, the candidate should provide information about proposed continuing research.

Please refer to: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/funding/training/index.htm for specific information on NHLBI programs and career development policies.

The NIDCD K02 program is a salary-only award providing at least 75% protected research time to recently independent scientists having Federal or nonFederal peer-reviewed research grant support (as Principal Investigator) within the NIDCD scientific mission for a period of at least two-three years beyond the anticipated award date of the K02 award.  Applicants for NIDCD K02 awards must have demonstrated independent research accomplishments at the time of application, but not yet be considered well-established in the research area of the application.  The K02 research plan can comprise an ongoing independent research program, an expansion of one or more research aims of an ongoing grant, or a new research trajectory (if research support is in place); the scope of the research plan should be made clear in the application.  If the requested K02 project period will exceed the period of funded independent grant support, the candidate should address his/her plans concerning continuing research support (e.g., planned continuing continuation grant application submissions).

Up to $25,000 per year.

Are competing K02 renewals accepted? No

Strong preference is given to candidates with active research project grant support from the NIEHS. If R01 grant support is from another NIH Institute, the candidate must propose a research project and career development program which is expected to have a defined impact on the environmental health sciences, be directly responsive to the mission of the NIEHS, show a decided career shift to the environmental health sciences, and commit to directing an R01 submission to the NIEHS within the first two years of the K02 award which proposes to study the human health effects of an environmentally relevant agent. Examples of environmentally relevant agents include industrial chemicals or manufacturing byproducts, metals, pesticides, herbicides, air pollutants and other inhaled toxicants, particulates or fibers, fungal, bacterial, or biologically derived toxins. Agents considered non-responsive to this announcement include, but are not limited to: alcohol, chemotherapeutic agents, radiation which is not the result of an ambient environmental exposure, smoking, except when considered as a secondary smoke exposure as a component in the indoor environment (particularly in children), drugs of abuse, pharmaceuticals, and infectious or parasitic agents, except when these are disease co-factors to an environmental toxicant exposure to produce the biological effect.

PI’s on R03 and R21 grant support are not eligible.

Up to $90,000 per year.

Generally none.

Are competing K02 renewals accepted?   One competing renewal is permitted.

Only investigators with active, peer-reviewed, independent research support from the NIMH at the time of submission may apply for a K02 award from NIMH. Eligibility for renewal of a K02 award is also limited to those who have an active NIMH grant at the time of application. NIMH grantees are PIs on active R01, R24, R37, P01, P20, P30, P50, U01 and U10 grants. Investigators who are subproject investigators on NIMH P or U series grants, or who are principal investigators on a subcontract of any other grant mechanism, are not eligible.  Scientists who hold a position with committed salary support for research or whose primary responsibility is administrative must demonstrate a compelling need for a K02 award.  Support from either the K02 or K24, or any combination of these two awards, is limited to two, five-year terms.  If support for the qualifying NIMH research grant lapses during the K02 project period, NIMH will continue to support the K02 through one resubmission of the qualifying NIMH grant.  If this resubmission is unsuccessful, NIMH will terminate the K02 award at that time.  Potential applicants are encouraged to contact their NIMH program officer to discuss their interests in this program.

Are competing K02 renewals accepted? No

In contrast to requirements of other institutes, applicants are not eligible for this award if they have a major, independent, peer-reviewed research grant (R01, subproject on a P01, or equivalent) prior to receiving the K02 award. This program supports the continued career development of clinician-scientists that are committed to a career in neuroscience research. The award provides salary and research costs for the first three years, and continued salary support for years four and five, contingent on successful competition for an R01 or equivalent award. Applicants should refer to the NINDS website (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/postdoc.htm#k02) for NINDS-specific instructions.”
