Biosketch:
Jennifer S. Read, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., D.T.M. & H., is board-certified in pediatrics and in pediatric infectious diseases; she joined the NICHD in 1990. Her areas of research include the development, execution, and analysis of domestic and international clinical trials and other epidemiological studies related to pediatric HIV infection and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Her research has focused on the role of cesarean section in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission and prevention of transmission among mothers who breastfeed, and conducted two very large individual patient data meta-analyses in these areas. In addition, she is involved in an operational research project about prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in rural India, and she directs the perinatal protocol of the NICHD International Site Development Initiative (NISDI), which, in collaboration with in-country investigators, is providing a description of the risks and benefits of antiretroviral therapy and interventions to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean.
