Performance Contracting

Energy ManagerIf you own or manage a building, energy performance contracting is an affordable way to make investments in new energy-efficiency equipment. You can make the upgrades you need now - with no up-front capital - and pay for them later through the energy savings that result. You benefit immediately, getting new equipment, expertise from energy service professionals, ongoing maintenance services, and the ability to accomplish many projects all at once. Best of all, these savings can be guaranteed.

Here’s how it works

You enter into an agreement with a private energy service company (ESCO). The ESCO will identify and evaluate your energy-saving opportunities and then recommend and install a package of improvements to be paid for through the savings. The ESCO will guarantee that savings meet or exceed annual payments to cover all project costs, usually over a contract term of 10-15 years. If savings don’t materialize, the ESCO pays the difference, not you! Read about the Colorado Department of Human Services success with performance contracting in GEO's case study "On the Fast Track to Better Buildings & Energy Savings" found on this site's publications page.

The most important part of effective performance contracting is selecting the right ESCO for you. The Governor’s Energy Office has streamlined this process by providing a list of 11 pre-approved ESCOs that will provide the highest level of service and dependability. While GEO cannot recommend any pre-approved ESCO over another, it can help you navigate the selection process and provide you with resources such as the 5 Steps to Successful Energy Performance Contracting.

If you are interested in working with GEO to implement Performance Contracting in your project, please submit the Performance Contracting program interest form found on our Funding Opportunities page. Also be sure to check out GEO's Renewables in Performance Contracting Grant.
