Tutorials for GIS

In order for NWS offices to edit shapefiles for use in AWIPS applications, most offices have chosen to use the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) suite of GIS software. Prevalent throughout the Line Office is ArcView 3.x and the newer ArcGIS. In order to assist the users who may not be knowlegeable in the use of these software products, the following are tutorials on how to use ArcView and ArcGIS to edit/modify various shapefiles for use in AWIPS and other applications.

Original ArcView 3.1 tutorial. This tutorial, written in 1999-2000 still contains relavant material for using the ArcView 3.x software.

Edit Cities with ArcView 3.x. This document deals with the editing of the new AWIPS city shapefile using ArcView 3.x and can be a useful reference for editing point shapefiles in general.

Edit Cities with ArcGIS 8/9 This document deals with the editin g of the new AWIPS city shapefile using ArcGIS 8/9 and can be a useful reference for editing point shapefiles in gen eral.
