During shipbuilding, metal surfaces need to be
prepared for welds and final coatings. Surface preparation may range from a simple wipe down to a total stripping of

After the spaces or surfaces are
evaluated
and the
cleaning process is
complete, the shipyard must determine what personnel, equipment, and materials
are required for the surface preparation and conduct a hazard
assessment for PPE. [1915.152(b)]
Note: Confined space entry is one of the leading
hazards associated with barge cleaning. Review the
Shipbuilding: Confined/Enclosed Spaces and Other Dangerous Atmospheres
chapter for information on how to protect workers from this hazard.
