During shipbuilding, metal surfaces need to be prepared for welds and final coatings. Surface preparation may range from a simple wipe down to a total stripping of coating. Methods include: Toxic Cleaning Solvents (such as chlorinated solvents, mineral spirits, or degreasers) Chemical Removers (such as paint stripper, methylene chloride) Mechanical Removers (such as abrasive blasting, needle gunning and grinding) Flammable Solvents (such as toluene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)) After the spaces or surfaces are evaluated and the cleaning process is complete, the shipyard must determine what personnel, equipment, and materials are required for the surface preparation and conduct a hazard assessment for PPE. [1915.152(b)] Note: Confined space entry is one of the leading hazards associated with barge cleaning.
