Surface Preparation for Coating of Surfaces
Figure 1: Illustration of surface preparation being performed.
During shipbuilding, metal surfaces need to be prepared for welds and final coatings. Surface preparation may range from a simple wipe down to a total stripping of coating. Methods include: After the spaces or surfaces are evaluated and the cleaning process is complete, the shipyard must determine what personnel, equipment, and materials are required for the surface preparation and conduct a hazard assessment for PPE. [1915.152(b)]

Note: Confined space entry is one of the leading hazards associated with barge cleaning. Review the Shipbuilding: Confined/Enclosed Spaces and Other Dangerous Atmospheres chapter for information on how to protect workers from this hazard.
