AIHC provides health care service to 32,000 Native Americans in northwest New Mexico. During the 2002 fiscal year, there were 88,625 patient visits alone in the ambulatory care clinic and 61,364 pharmacy visits, with an average of 109 admissions per year to our 4-bed hospital.

Purpose Statement:
The Albuquerque Indian Health Center Pharmacy Residency program exists to train and equip future pharmacists with the skills and tools necessary to function as independent, responsible practitioners, who are good managers of the medication use process, participants in medication safety, and educators of patients, providers, and pharmacy students. Residents will also be effective pharmacist clinicians, able to successfully run pharmacy based clinics. In addition to these characteristics, our residents will possess leadership skills and strong roots in the Public Health service for successful careers as both pharmacists and commissioned officers upon completion of our program.

Rotational Experience opportunities:
Administrative, Drug Information, Pediatrics, Renal Clinic, Ambulatory Care with emphases on disease state management modules in endocrinology, hypertension, infectious disease, hyperlipidemia, women’s health, elective(s) and field pharmacy experience including travel to remote sites. Two to three elective rotations are available through the University of New Mexico Hospital. Residents have the opportunity to be part of a Journal club with other residents/pharmacists within the city and can be a guest lecturer at UNM College of Pharmacy.

AIHC is an established learning environment that currently employs ten pharmacy interns. Pharmacists work as a team with providers and nurses in clinic to meet patient’s needs (scheduling next appointment, lab draw, prescriptions) right in the same room as their visit (“re-engineering“ concept). Several pharmacy students from University of New Mexico (UNM), University of North Carolina and eventually University of Arizona and University of Illinois (Chicago) complete rotations at AIHC as part of their experiential program.

AIHC is five minute walking distance from UNM campus and Health Sciences Center. Enjoy cultural activities within the city at Old Town or in five surrounding pueblos (Jemez, Isleta, Santa Domingo, Santa Ana, Sandia). It is a short drive to National Park(s), ski resorts, hiking, biking, and outdoor activities. Albuquerque is home to the annual International Balloon Fiesta.
