OBJECTIVES: To determine the CSF HIV isolation rate and CSF viral load in patients (pts) with HIV infection and neurological manifestations. METHODS: Quantitative HIV viral cultures were performed of the CSF, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and plasma of patients with HIV infection in which a cerebrospinal tap was performed because of neurological manifestations. HIV titers were expressed as tissue culture infectious dosis (TCID)/ml. RESULTS: Study population: 23 patients (21 men and 2 women) with the following stage of disease: WHO stage I: 2, II: 2, III: 2, IV: 17. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. By quantitative HIV cultures higher titers were obtained from plasma (median 100 TCID/ml, range 1-2000) than from CSF (median 5TCID/ml, range 5-25). CONCLUSION: HIV was isolated more often from the CSF of patients with an HIV associated neurological disorder than in patients with neurological manifestations not associated with HIV infection.
