Dealing
with Difficult Customers
All state employees serve customers, whether those
customers are citizens, other agencies, or fellow
employees. Inevitable, employees encounter customers who
are, for a variety of reasons, difficult to deal with:
perhaps impatient, extremely demanding, or even verbally
abusive. Employees and customers both benefit if
employees have effective strategies for responding to
difficult customers in a manner that maintains customer
service and simultaneously minimizes the stress
experienced by the employee during the encounter. In this
class, we explore specific strategies for dealing with
common types of "difficult customer" behavior.
