Nation wide information campaigns have little impact on calls received at the national AIDS Hot Line in Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: 1. Obtain information on the impact of nation wide information campaigns on calls received at the national AIDS Hot Line in Sweden. 2. Determine whether the questions posed to the counsellors have changed in the course of years. METHODS: Detailed information was gathered on all the 60,897 calls received in 1987-1992. The documentation was arrangered chronologically, and every twelth call was included in a material amounting to 4996 units. The material was analyzed and variations with confidence interval of > or = 95% were included. RESULTS: 1. The amount of calls received has not been significantly affected by massive nation wide information campaignes, regardless of whether the telephone number of the Hot Line has been present in the campaign material, TV spots etc, or not. Independent media productions, such as documentaries, debates etc, have resulted in a significant increase of calls, and has also had a noticeable impact on the character of the the calls. 2. Calls defined by the counsellors as "the worried well" have significantly decreased since 1987, whereas questions about HIV testing, particularly those about seroconversion, have significantly increased since 1987. No other changes in the panorama of calls are traceable in the material. CONCLUSIONS: Independant media productions have a significant impact on the amount and character of calls received at the AIDS Hot Line in Sweden, but nation wide information campaigns leave no trace in the analyzed material. Further studies are necessary in order to determine whether the findings reflect the impact of information strategies on the population at large.
