MLE Academy Logo The Boarding Officer Course (BOC) is offered to U.S. Coast Guard personnel and foreign naval officers. The purpose of the BOC is to prepare Boarding Officers for the arduous duties associated with enforcing laws and treaties at sea. Graduates of the BOC possess the skills and knowledge necessary to lead a Coast Guard boarding team in the enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations in a safe and professional manner. During the six week course, students receive training in a variety of courses including: criminal law, defensive tactics, boating safety and many others. Students are evaluated verbally, in writing, and through performance based training evolutions. Graduates leave as PQS instructors and will train personnel at their unit in law enforcement procedures.

College Credit Recommendation

Credit recommendation from American Council on Education (ACE) applies retroactively to 01 November, 2004 as follows: in the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in defensive tactics, 3 in criminal investigations, 3 in criminal evidence and procedures, and 1 in instructor techniques.

Prerequisites for Attendance

  1. Member possesses, in the opinion of the CO/OIC, the requisite judgment, maturity, attitude, and aptitude to serve as a Boarding Officer.
  2. Member has satisfactorily completed Task 1-01 (annual physical fitness standards) of the Boarding Officer/Boarding Officer Team Member Personnel Qualification Standard (PQS), COMDTINST M16247.3 (series).
  3. Member has satisfactorily completed Task 1-02 (semi-annual M9 weapons qualifications including the Judgmental Pistol Course) of the Boarding Officer/Boarding Officer Team Member Personnel Qualification Standard (PQS), COMDTINST M16247.3 (series).
  4. Member is within maximum allowable weight in accordance with Allowable Weight Standards for Coast Guard Military Personnel, COMDTINST M1020.8 (series).
  5. Member must also have either eighteen months remaining at current unit or have orders to a unit with specific law enforcement responsibility. They must also be conducting boardings within 3 months of graduation.
Note Failure to meet the above prerequisites may result in disenrollment from the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy.

Waivers

All waivers must be approved by COMDT (CG-5312).
