Title List of Electronic Record Files in the National Archives and Records Administration

Introduction

In the "Title List: A Preliminary and Partial Listing of the Data Files in the National Archives and Records Administration," titles of electronic records files in the National Archives are arranged by Branch of the U.S. government, then by agency, and thereunder by Record Group (R.G.). The National Archives and Records Administration's Record Groups identify bodies of organizationally related records. Generally, each Federal agency or major subdivision has its own Record Group. Entries for electronic data files can be accessed by selecting the appropriate link in the listing of agencies, or by selecting the specific Record Group of interest.

The Title List is "preliminary and partial" because it represents a subset of the electronic records in the custody of the National Archives. Because the Title List is preliminary and partial, some Record Groups have no series or files listed. The Title List database was maintained by reference staff of the Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division; the database is current as of December, 1998.

In the Title List, electronic records holdings from the Executive Branch appear first, with the Executive Agencies or departments listed in alphabetical order as they appear in the United States Government Manual. The relevant R.G.'s for each, including R.G.'s for terminated or transferred agencies, are in R.G. number order. The R.G. number appears as the final three characters in each unique title line. Independent Executive Agencies each constitute a separate Record Group; they are listed in R.G. number order, after the Executive Agencies in Section XV: Independent Establishments and Government Corporations. Entries for Committees, Commissions, and Boards (Section XVI) follow and then entries for holdings from the Legislative and Judicial Branches. Titles of data files that other governments have transferred to the National Archives as well as titles of donated electronic historical materials are in Section XIX. A complete list of Record Groups with electronic records in the National Archives, broken down by branch of government, is also listed for your convenience. A complete list of Record Groups for all of the records in the National Archives is available in the Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United States

Each section of the public title list contains information on electronic records within a Record Group, with the series titles in alphabetical order. Each data file in the series has its own entry. Each entry includes the title of the data file, the Record Group it is in, and a status code. Each status code is linked to its explanation. Status codes generally give additional information on the status of the electronic file, related records in another Record Group, or other pertinent information about the data not contained in the title.

In addition, the NARA web site includes other materials related to NARA's holdings of electronic records. This material is located under Information about Electronic Records for Researchers. This material is not inclusive. For information about potential holdings not described anywhere on the NARA homepage, please contact the reference staff.

If you wish to download a copy of the entire Title List, you may do so through the use of the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) . Anonymous FTP (password "guest") to FTP.CU.NIH.GOV, directory NARA_Electronic. A Read Me file on the FTP site provides further information about the Title List and Title List extract files. Note that as of December 28, 1998, the full Title List file has 23,331 lines and is approximately 1.7 megabytes in size. For further information, please contact the reference staff. Likewise, ordering information for copies of any of the data files in NARA's custody is available upon request.
