NHLBI announces the availability of a website which will be useful to offerors in preparing a proposal for Broad Agency Announcement BAA-NHLBI-WH-06-09 (previously numbered 05-21), Opportunity to Use Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Resources. The website, at http://www.whiscience.org, is a scientific, research-oriented site intended for the scientific community at large. The website contains information on the WHI Program, how to find a WHI collaborator, lists of published papers and funded ancillary studies, and other science-related topics. When the BAA is posted to the FedBizOpps (http://www.fbo.gov) in January, the whiscience website will provide a link to the posted BAA. Note that NHLBI is no longer posting RFPs and BAAs on the NHLBI web site.

NHLBI's intention to issue the BAA on or about Ja n uary 9, 2006 , was previously announced in the NIH Guide. As stated then, the BAA will solicit proposals to maximize the scientific yield from the biologic resource and associated participant exposure and outcome data generated by the WHI since 1993. The pre-proposal conference remains scheduled for February 27, 2006 , on the NIH campus.

The WHI includes some 161,000 women in a set of overlapping clinical trials of post-menopausal hormone therapy, low fat dietary pattern, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation, as well as an observational study. The BAA will seek the application of technologies that enable comprehensive, yet efficient, investigation of sets of markers associated with disease outcomes or of modulators and mediators that might substantively explain the pathway of exposure or treatment effects on disease outcomes. The primary disease outcomes are cardiovascular diseases, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and fractures.
