2007 National Park Transportation Interpreter Program

The National Park Transportation Interpreter Program placed 26 transportation interpreters in 16 National Parks from California to Massachusetts for 12 weeks during summer 2007. This program was developed to support and enhance alternative transportation systems in parks by providing on-board and point of boarding interpretation.

These transportation interpreters, who are largely college interns, encourage visitors to use transportation systems by enhancing the visitor experience associated with mass and/or alternatively fueled modes of transportation (i.e. shuttles, buses, trains, ferries, boats, bikes, etc.).The ultimate goal of this program is to reduce vehicle congestion and related impacts such as noise and air pollution by encouraging the use of alternative transportation.

In 2007, transportation interpreters provided a diverse array of services for national park visitors. Some of those activities included:

  • In Eisenhower National Historic Site, the interpreter explored President Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway System rationale and his Middle East Oil policy as they relate to alternative transportation with park visitors.
  • In Gateway National Recreation Area-Sandy Hook Unit, the interpreter highlighted the benefits of ferries to reducing congestion in the New York City area onboard the park ferries.
  • In Lowell National Historical Park, the interpreter showcased the park’s historic and modern trolley systems, raising awareness of plans to extend the trolley routes to connect with regional commuter rail stations.
  • In Rocky Mountain National Park, the transportation interpreter discussed the merits of alternative transportation as it relates to congestion, air quality, protection of park resources and climate change onboard the park shuttle bus.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Dinosaur National Monument, Everglades National Park, Fort Smith National Historic Site, Glacier National Park, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Rosie the Riveter / World War II Homefront National Historical Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and Yosemite National Park also hosted transportation interpreters in 2007.

The National Park Transportation Interpreter Program is a partnership between the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service is made possible through the generous support of Ford Motor Company, a Proud Partner of America’s National Parks.
