K23 Model Application imageNational Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
K02 Model Applications

The two attached applications are provided as models for individuals who are planning to apply for an Independent Scientist Award (K02) from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). They have been posted in response to frequent requests for examples of successful applications that were highly rated by the Initial Review Group (IRG). One model is on the topic of lung development and vascular biology research; the other focuses on fluid flow and vascular adhesion. The applications are offered as examples only and should not preclude potential applicants from seeking further advice from experienced colleagues or from research training staff members at NHLBI.

The model applications use an earlier version of PHS 398. However, current applicants should use the newer version of the PHS 398 (rev. 9/04) application. Please note that applicants should use the current PHS 398 application forms and instructions, which are available at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm. As part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ implementation of e-Government, during FY 2006 the NIH will gradually transition each research grant mechanism to electronic submission through Grants.gov and use the SF 424 Research and Related (R&R) forms. Therefore, once the transition is made for the K02 grant mechanism, investigators and institutions will be required to submit applications electronically using Grants.gov. For more information and an initial time: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-06-035.html. NIH will announce the K02 grant mechanism change in the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html).

Information of an identifying and proprietary nature such as the level of effort, the timetable, the name of the applicant and the names of collaborators, mentors, and institutions has been removed and replaced with the underline symbol “_____.” In some instances, the applicant’s name has been replaced with “the candidate,” and the names of institutions have been replaced with “the institution.” Also, these model applications do not include the face page; budget pages; biographical sketch; other support; letters of reference; statements by consultant(s), and collaborator(s); institutional commitment to candidate; literature cited; consortium/contractual arrangements; consultants; and appendix pages, all of these must be included in K02 applications.

The most recent announcement of the NIH-wide K02 award can be found at the following URL: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-020.html

For additional information specific to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute K02 awards, please see supplemental information at: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/funding/training/redbook/hints4k02.htm
