Appendix A: Biosafety

Scientists who receive specimens from the NHLBI Biologic Specimen Repository must be aware of and follow all applicable biosafety regulations related to the use of the specimens. The biosafety reference material and programs described below are provided as a courtesy to Repository users.

The following regulatory and safety standards and recommendations should be reviewed and the appropriate guidelines followed by all investigators who receive materials from the NHLBI Biologic Specimen Repository:

  1. Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 3rd Edition, HHS Publication No. (CDC) 93-8395, May 1993.
  2. Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens; final rule. Federal Register 56:64175-64182, 1991.
  3. Agent summary statement for human immunodeficiency virus and report on laboratory-acquired infection with human immunodeficiency virus. MMWR 37(S-4):1-22, 1988.
  4. Update: universal precautions for prevention of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and other bloodborne pathogens in health-care settings. MMWR 37(24):377-382, 387-388, 1988.
  5. Public health service statement on management of occupational exposure to human immunodeficiency virus, including considerations regarding zidovudine postexposure use. MMWR 39(RR-1):1-14, 1990.
Publications 1 and 2 can be obtained by phoning the Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office at (202) 783-3238. Publications 3 - 5 can be obtained by calling the CDC voice information system at (404)332-4555. A fee is charged by both agencies for these publications.

The World Health Organization publishes a biosafety manual that reviews the practices and procedures needed for safe handling of infectious materials in the laboratory. This manual lists national guidelines and codes of practice for various countries, which may be useful for those scientists developing their own standard procedures. Information on how to obtain this manual, Laboratory Biosafety Manual, 2nd edition (1993) may be obtained by writing Distribution and Sales, Office of Publications, WHO, 1211 Geneva 27 Switzerland.
