Eruption of Sicily’s Mt. Etna

Two weeks after beginning to erupt on October 27, 2002, Sicily’s Mt. Etna was still emitting a dirty ash plume on November 11, 2002. This image of the ongoing eruption was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. The red outline indicates that the volcano was still producing a thermal anomaly signature hot enough to be detected from space.
