IHS Division of Oral Health
Job Opportunities: Externship Program

Externships provide a unique opportunity to gain professional experience as well as to determine whether a career with the IHS Division of Oral Health or a position at a specific IHS or Tribal site is right for you. The application for the 2008 Externship Program ended on February 28, 2008. Thank you to the over 150 Class of 2009 dental students that applied for an externship experience in 2008. The application instructions for the 2009 Externship Program for the Class of 2010 will be posted at this webpage on October 31, 2008. In 2008 we placed 91 of 158 applicants. JRCOSTEP is competitive with only 3 awards of the 91 externships in 2007. The other 88 students were granted externships of a minimum of 2 weeks with travel expenses covered up to $2K. Externships are available for dental students between their 3rd and 4th year of dental school from April 1 through September 30 and for dental hygiene students (JRCOSTEP only) between the 3rd and 4th year of their baccalaureate program. Externs that have less than 31 days available, but are willing to do an externship of at least 2 weeks with travel expense assistance must complete the application by the February 28 deadline.

We are currently developing an online application this year that will be available here on October 31, 2008. Dental Students in the Class of 2010 should mark their calendars to return to this page on October 31, 2008. The 2009 Externship Program encourages Dental Students in the Class of 2010 to apply at this webpage to match to an externship. Funding for travel to externships will be available for those externships scheduled between April 1, 2009 and September 30, 2009. If you have at least 2 weeks available summer 2009, then we look forward to seeing your application. We will leave the three 2008 documents posted to allow you to see an example of what we asked the 2008 applicants. The questions will not be the same for 2009. Applications for summer 2009 will not be accepted before October 31, 2008.

Here is some additional information about the USPHS JRCOSTEP

How much will I earn?
JRCOSTEP students receive the basic pay (taxable) and allowances (non-taxable) of an Ensign (pay grade O-1) officer (approximately $2,500 per month) plus certain costs of travel and transportation from the place from which called to active duty to the duty station and return. As with all officers, prior service in a Uniformed Service will count towards years of service for pay. For further information on pay interpretation, refer to the Pay and Grades, Titles, and Billets buttons on the home page.

What benefits will I have?
JRCOSTEP officers are entitled to some, but not all, of the rights, benefits, and privileges accorded to PHS commissioned officers serving on extended active duty. Healthcare is restricted to emergencies and space-available care at a military/medical treatment facility (MTF). Space available (Space-A) flights on military aircraft are not authorized. JRCOSTEP officers are also not required to wear the PHS uniform unless directed to do so by the Director, OCCO, in which case a uniform allowance of $250 will be paid to the JRCOSTEP officer. Annual leave (vacation) is accumulated at the rate of 1 day for each 12 consecutive days of active duty and all annual leave must be used during the JRCOSTEP officer's active-duty tour or be forfeited. Sick leave is authorized as needed. In addition, once JRCOSTEP officers complete their tour, they become an inactive reserve member and, as such, continue to accrue credit towards their base pay.
