FY 1972

Description of an experimental investigation on the response of the upper ocean to variable winds

Halpern, D.

NOAA Tech. Report ERL231-POL9, 51 pp (1972)

Beginning on 4 August 1971, 32-day time series of currents and temperature in the upper region of the ocean (from about 5 meters to 55 meters) together with time series measurements of surface wind, atmospheric pressure and temperature were obtained at one location in the northeast Pacific, remote from intense boundary currents and from continental boundaries. The primary aim of this research activity was to investigate the response of the upper ocean to variable wind stress. This report describes the instrumented single point compound mooring system, the equipment, the testing program and some initial results. It does not contain an analysis of the data.
