Must obtain water well permit or authorization for each site. By law, every new well in the state that diverts ground water must have a well permit. The Groundwater staff determines the amount of water available and analyzes the potential for injury to other existing water rights under strict statutory guidelines. See "Guide to Well Permits, Water Rights, and Water Administration."

GEOTHERMAL WELLS: All subsurface geothermal fluids are part of the ground water resources of the State. The Division of Water Resources requires a permit for well construction. The Geothremal rules establish minimum standards for the construction, testing, operation, and abandonment of geothermal wells, and the reinjection of geothermal fluids.
