What is the difference between the FNL and CDC Reanalysis data sets?

Differences between the 2 datasets can be found by looking at the model horizontal and vertical grid resolutions and time intervals in the following README files:
FNL: ftp://www.arl.noaa.gov/pub/archives/fnl/README.FNL
CDC1: ftp://www.arl.noaa.gov/pub/archives/reanalysis/README.TXT
The most obvious difference is the horizontal spatial resolution (2.5 degrees (~278km) for CDC and 190.5km for FNL).
