TED KOPPEL TO INTERVIEW UNITED NATIONS GENERAL IN RWANDA DURING GENOCIDE, ROMÉO DALLAIRE, AT UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM

June 12, 2002

WHAT:“A Good Man in Hell: General Roméo Dallaire and the Rwanda Genocide.” In a conversation with Ted Koppel, Canadian General Roméo Dallaire will share his experiences from 1994, when he was commander of the UN Mission in Rwanda and reflect on the genocide he was unable to stop, as well as his struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder after his return from Rwanda. Before the genocide occurred, General Dallaire warned of possible mass murder of the Tutsi minority. Unheeded by UN officials in New York, his warning became a reality. After the murder of 10 Belgian peacekeepers assigned to protect the Prime Minister, the UN recalled almost all of General Dallaire’s forces.

The program is sponsored by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Committee on Conscience (COC). The COC works to raise awareness of contemporary acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
