Training & Career Development

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) utilizes a variety of granting mechanisms to assist researchers at all career levels to develop into independent research scientists. The Training and Career Development Office at NINDS exists to develop and maintain training support mechanisms and advise applicants before, during and after submission of an application.

Training opportunities are available in basic, clinical and translational research. Career development programs (K awards) are designed primarily to support clinician-scientists doing either basic or clinical research, but are also used for other specialized purposes. Fellowships (F awards) are available for predoctoral and postdoctoral scientists, as well as for established investigators who wish to change career direction or gain new skills for their research. A Pathway to Independence award (K99/R00) is intended to provide outstanding scientists who have less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience with support to finish their mentored phase of research and transition into an independent research position.
