  • IBLA Affirms Jeep Safari Route Decisions

On July 31, 2008, the Interior Board of Land Appeals affirmed decisions made by the Moab and Monticello Field Offices to renew special recreation permits authorizing the Red Rock
4-Wheelers to conduct the annual Moab Jeep Safari and Labor Day Campout.  For the Moab Field Office, the decision also applies to all other organized group and commercial use of the Jeep Safari Routes. These decisions, dating from 2006, were appealed by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.  See IBLA 2007-244, 2008-100 for details.

Located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau, the Moab Field Office encompasses 1.8 million acres of scenic canyon country. Carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers, Moab’s public lands include a vast variety of arches, natural bridges, mesas, and spires.

Major land uses include a wide array of private and commercial recreation uses, oil and gas production, mining, and livestock grazing. Recreational use of BLM-administered lands, with two million annual site visits, supports hundreds of local jobs and the bulk of the business community.
