U.S. Department of Labor Announces $443,081 Grant to Aid Massachusetts Workers

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA) today announced a $443,081 grant to assist approximately 125 workers in Massachusetts affected by downsizings at the Lucent Technologies Inc. facilities in North Andover and Westford, Mass.

“Former Lucent workers will be able to use re-employment and other services to prepare themselves for good jobs in growing industries,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. “Through this grant, affected workers can access the workforce investment system to find solid employment opportunities in the Commonwealth.”

The grant, awarded to the Massachusetts Department of Labor and Workforce Development, will provide affected workers with an array of re-employment services. Services may include skills assessment, individual counseling, case management, and job search and relocation assistance.

Lucent Technologies notified the Commonwealth of the planned downsizing on Jan. 26, 2006. The company plans to shift its focus from manufacturing telecommunications equipment to providing converged network maintenance services.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
