U.S. Department of Labor announces nearly $900,000 grant to  assist Maine workers affected by layoffs
Grant to assist workers from Fraser Papers and Domtar Industries

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a grant of $894,918, with $399,972 released initially, to assist approximately 155 workers in Maine affected by layoffs at Fraser Papers, located in Madawaska, and Domtar Industries, located in Baileyville.

“This nearly $900,000 grant will provide re-employment services to help these Maine workers land new jobs in growing industries,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

In June and July, both Fraser Papers and Domtar Industries announced layoffs.  Both companies applied for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for their workers and, as of August 15, all 155 workers have been certified as eligible for TAA.

The grant announced today was awarded to the Maine Department of Labor and will provide services not covered under the TAA program, such as assessment, counseling, case management and other supportive services.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary of Labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants, please visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
