U.S. Labor Department announces nearly $20 million in grants to assist communities affected by Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Labor today announced nearly $20 million in grants to assist several states with planning and implementation projects to address the workforce challenges created by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.

“These $20 million in grants will help workers affected by military base closures and relocations,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. “Civilian workers at those bases will be provided employment services to help them find new jobs in high-growth industries.”

These projects will provide employment-related services to affected workers to help them obtain employment in high-growth, high-demand occupations.  Projects will help connect these individuals with job opportunities in the civilian economy.

All of the states targeted for this funding have established key regional economic development partners to help leverage the collective public and private sector assets and resources necessary to help design strategies that focus on infrastructure and talent development needs.

The list of states and jurisdictions receiving funding are listed below.

Colorado                     $2,000,000
Florida                         $4,000,000
District of Columbia     $1,000,000
Maryland                     $4,000,000
Virginia                        $4,978,262
Texas                          $4,000,000

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
