U.S. Department of Labor Announces $367,350 Grant to Aid Dislocated Workers in Maine

PORTLAND, MAINE - U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven J. Law today announced a National Emergency Grant of $367,350 to assist dislocated workers in Maine. The grant will help approximately 50 workers laid off due to the closing of Tartan Textile, Inc., located in Portland.

"This $367,350 grant shows that we will go the extra mile to help Mainers find new jobs and careers," said Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven L. Law. "Maine's economy is creating jobs and this grant will train workers in new skills and fields. The unemployment rate has dropped from 5.1 percent to 4.5 percent over the last year."

The new grant will provide an array of services including individual counseling, career planning, skills training and on-the-job training. In addition, the grant will pay for supportive services such as child care, transportation, job-related certifications, uniforms, and job-related equipment. Workers in Cumberland and York Counties are covered by this grant, which will be administered by Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc.
