U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $625,000 Grant to Aid Dislocated Rhode Island Workers

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of $625,000 to aid approximately 150 workers laid off from four Rhode Island companies in Cranston, Lincoln and Providence.

"This Administration is committed to providing help to workers who are transitioning," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This $625,000 grant will provide an array of services, including employment development, retraining and adult education to these workers as they prepare for new careers."

Awarded to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, the grant will provide assistance to workers dislocated from Cranston Logistics, Swarovski North America, Sun Life Financial and Boston Financial Data Services, Inc.

Services provided by the grant will include assessment, individual counseling, career planning, occupational skills training and job-readiness training, as well as supportive services such as child care, transportation assistance, job-related certifications, uniforms and equipment.

Project services will be available to laid-off workers in Bristol, Kent, Newport, Providence and Washington Counties.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
