U.S. Department of Labor Awards $1.2 Million to Faith-Based and Community Organizations

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced $1.2 million in grants to 49 faith-based and community organizations to help them meet the employment and training needs of specific populations through the public workforce system.

“Faith-based and community organizations are uniquely positioned to assist job seekers who are among the most in need of help and this Administration is committed to helping these groups with their important work,” said Chao. “Forty-nine community groups will utilize these grants and help people who want to work take advantage of the resources available at local One-Stop Career Centers across the nation.”

Organizations receiving these grants will focus on the needs of special populations, such as ex-offenders, individuals with disabilities, job seekers who face language barriers and low-income and other economically disadvantaged workers. In many cases, the grantees will provide supportive services and individual mentoring not available through the One-Stop delivery system.

“By connecting faith-based and community organizations with the public workforce system, individuals who might not otherwise be served will find training and employment opportunities in local areas,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. “By working together, workforce investment boards and local faith-based community organizations will close service gaps and help more Americans find jobs with promising career paths.”
