U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $743,607 Grant to Aid Dislocated Workers in Alabama

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $743,607, with an initial release of $235,619, to assist 25 members of the National Guard and Military Reserves in Alabama who interrupted or postponed employment-related assistance in order to fulfill military deployment requirements. The grant will also serve the spouses of military personnel who lost their lives as a result of military deployments and the spouses of returning members of the National Guard or Military Reserves.

"Alabama military personnel and their families have made tremendous personal sacrifices to serve our country," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "To help them resettle after their active duty ends, this grant will provide training and placement services so that they can secure jobs in high growth industries."

The grant, awarded to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, will ensure that members of the Alabama National Guard and Military Reservists receive their remaining Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) services for the duration of their eligibility. The grant also will enable the State to provide needs-related payments for those individuals not eligible for services under the TAA program, including the spouses of returning military personnel and of those killed while serving in combat zones.

The grant will provide outreach and recruitment services, training for demand occupations in high growth industry sectors and supportive services including child care, transportation and needs-related payments.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
