SCIENTIFIC NAME: Celtis laevigata

COMMON NAME: sugar hackberry, sugarberry

LEAVES: Alternate. Has an inequilateral base (elm family). May be entire or serrate. Has leaf galls (hackberry galls) and is not pubescent. Leaves are light green. Palmate venation with three major veins. 3 - 5" long.

FRUIT: Red berry. Not particularly showy.

BARK: Smooth bark with warts all the way to the ground.

OTHER: Grows 70' to 80' tall. Tolerates high soil pH. Best of all the hackberries. A member of the Ulmaceae family. Huntsville, AL is using this species for a street tree in parts of the city. Lots of hackberries planted as street trees in Montgomery, AL.
