As authorized by the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users of 2005 (SAFETEA-LU), the FTA supports locally planned and operated public mass transit systems throughout the United States.

In this section of the website "About FTA", information is provided which describes the administration of the agency, including how it is structured, how it operates, its vision and mission, performance measurement, employment opportunities, and how to contact offices and staff (see the links to the left). Other sections of the website provide greater detail about FTA's programs.
