Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Announce the Recovery of Stolen Unisys Computer and Arrest of Khalil Abdullah-Raheem | ||
Alexandria, Virginia – The VA OIG and FBI today announce the recovery of a stolen computer owned by Unisys Corporation that reportedly contained insurance claim data, including names, addresses, and personal identifiers, for approximately 16,000 living patients treated in VA Medical Centers in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA. Khalil Abdullah-Raheem, 21, a resident of Washington, DC, was charged yesterday in federal court with a violation of Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 641 (Theft of Government Property) and released on $50,000 Personal Recognizance bond. Abdullah-Raheem is employed by a company that provides temporary labor to Unisys. Investigators believe that VA data was not targeted by the defendant. The FBI is conducting a forensics analysis to determine if VA data was compromised after the theft of the computer. |
