The Role of Smart Structures in Managing an Aging Highway Infrastructure

This is the plenary presentation made by Dr. Steven Chase, Team Leader of the Infrastructure Inspection and Management Team (which includes the NDE Program) at a joint session of the 8th Annual International Symposium on Smart Structures and Materials and the 6th Annual International Symposium on NDE for Health Monitoring and Diagnostics on March 7, 2001 in Newport Beach California. 

The role of smart structures and materials and nondestructive evaluation in managing an aging highway infrastructure are presented. The presentation provides background information and discusses the motivation and goals of the research conducted by the NDE Validation Center.
