Maternal and Child Health


MCH Poster Session 2007


Founded in 1950, the Department of Maternal and Child Health is one of the world's leading academic departments for MCH research, teaching and practice. We are dedicated to improving the health of women, children and families domestically and globally .

Our teaching program provides our students with broad exposures to MCH population needs and priorities domestically and globally and the skills needed to become MCH leaders of tomorrow. Our faculty represents a rich mix of academic backgrounds and interests, contributing expertise and leadership in a wide range of MCH disciplines. We invite you to join us as we embark upon an exciting new year of scholarship, leadership and service.

The Department of Maternal and Child Health has been designated as a World Health Organization Collaborating Center![Read more]

Herbert B. Peterson, MD, professor and chair in the Department of Maternal and Child Health , has been inducted into membership in The Institute of Medicine (IOM) on Oct. 12, 2008.[Read more]

Jonathan B. Kotch, MD, MPH,
has been named winner of the 2008 Martha May Eliot Award by the American Public Health Association. The award honors exceptional achievements in maternal and child health.[Read more]

Diane Rowley, MD, MPH, professor of the practice of public health in MCH  will help to lead MCH new initiatives in eliminating health disparities. [Read more]

Carolyn Halpern, PhD, associate professor of maternal and child health, co-authored a UNC study: parenting can override effect of genes in how babies respond to stress. [Read more]
