The Workforce and Economic Research Division of the WorkSource Oregon Employment Department announces the release ofthe Business Information Center (BIC), a new online tool designed to provide businesses with labor market information that can be customized for their individual needs. The BIC provides companies with information about their industry, localized economic and population trends, resources for recruiting and training staff, tax credits and business financing. Businesses can also find information about local associations and chambers of commerce at the site.

The BIC and its tools are “impressive,” according to Gary Liao, a Web-site developer and owner of WhereExactly.com. “There is a lot of great information at the site and they’ve made it easy to find. I love the statistics and demographic information and have already added a link to this site from our home page so that our site’s visitors can learn more about the area.”

Mary Bosch, principal consultant at Marketek Inc. says, “My economic development consulting business depends on having the most timely and often localized data possible. I often rely on current and trend data of the Oregon Employment Department. The Business Information Center is a great way to access the information at my convenience.”

Wednesday, August 24, The BIC was honored by the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) with the 2005 Labor Market Information Communications Publication Award in the category of "internet or electronic product or service providing labor market and workforce information to customers." The award was given out at the NASWA LMI Directors meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. There were 66 entries from 22 states for the award.

Graham Slater, Assistant Director for the Workforce and Economic Research Division of the WorkSource Oregon Employment Department says: “This is a tremendous award for Oregon. The thing I ‘m most proud of is that this new internet product was built and developed based completely on the requests we get from our business customers.”

The BIC was created through a unique partnership, Slater says.

“This is a great example of collaboration between the Workforce Analysts, who have direct contact with the public, and the developers who created the web interface behind the scenes.”
