The future of a productive and civic society depends on the potential of its children. America is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, yet 15 million children live in poverty, more than 11 million have no health insurance, 40% enter kindergarten unprepared, and 20% suffer from preventable mental problems. These barriers hold back individual children and families, and they threaten to erode the very fabric of the society in which we live.

The UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families & Communities provides children with the best opportunities for health and well-being, and the chance to assume productive roles within their families and communities. The Center helps society to create health promoting environments for children so they can assume productive roles within their families and communities. The Center has created a unique partnership of University faculty, students, and researchers; service providers; community organizations; local residents; businesses; and government agencies to:
