With its unprecedented 1.38-micron channel, MODIS can see high cirrus clouds, even ones not visible to the naked eye. Cirrus clouds are important in that they both trap heat, having a warming influence on climate, and obstruct views of the surface. MODIS allows scientists to remove cirrus clouds to better reveal underlying features below.
