New parking for 40 cars and 8 horse trailers will soon be available to visitors of Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. With a November 17th, 2004, completion date scheduled, Wilder Construction has already begun clearing and grading the site that is part of the former U.S. Nike missile site at 166th Way S.E.
In addition to the new parking lot, substantial landscaping improvements will be done. Large amounts of existing asphalt adjacent to forested wetland areas will be removed, and buffer areas will be planted and restored. Significant coniferous and deciduous trees were identified and saved as part of the project and will be incorporated into the overall design of the area. The parking improvements are part of Phase I of the Cougar Mountain Master Plan.
While work is underway, parking will remain outside of the locked entry gate, and due to heavy vehicular traffic, pedestrian and all other access to the road will be intermittent. Access to the construction site itself will be closed for the duration of the project.
