Monday marks official start to candidate filings; Single, simple ballot unveiled

As many as 100 King County candidates are expected to officially file for office on Monday as the 2004 candidate filing period kicks off. Coinciding with the filing date, King County Elections is unveiling the single, simple ballot design voters will see in the upcoming September 14 primary election.

Candidates running for office within King County file with the Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division at the King County Administration Building - 500 Fourth Avenue, Room 553 (Fifth Floor). The filing period begins on Monday, July 26 and continues through Friday, July 30. Filings will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Candidates for statewide, multi-county, and federal offices file in Olympia with the Secretary of State.

Sample ballots and other information about the new primary will be available to candidates as they file their declarations of candidacy. Additionally, the county will offer camera-ready graphics to candidates and campaigns to use in their mailings to explain the new primary system.

Dean Logan, Director of King County Records, Elections and Licensing Services, said he expects there to be a lot of curiosity over the new system. The primary ballot will require voters to choose a party preference and limit their votes in partisan races to candidates within that party. If someone selects a party but then strays over to select a candidate from a different party, only votes for candidates that correspond with their party selection will count. All votes in nonpartisan races and on ballot measures will count.

"As candidates begin to officially file Monday, we want them to leave with sample ballots to take around with them as they campaign. They can help spread the word about the new system - and help assure voters that the new primary is easy to use," said Logan. "We want candidates to feel comfortable with the new ballot design so they can help dispel concern about the primary."

An informational booth will be available throughout the filing period with county representatives on hand to pass out information and answer questions about the primary, Logan said.

Candidates and interested parties can visit the county's web site throughout filing week to receive updates on who has filed. Updates will be posted at 12 noon and at 5 p.m. each day.

To be eligible to vote in the September 14 primary election, eligible citizens must be registered by August 14, 2004. For additional information, please call 206 296-VOTE or visit the Elections Web site.
