Women’s Health Resources at the National Library of Medicine

The purpose of this page is to present topics pertaining to women’s health collected by National Library of Medicine information products to support the mission of the Office of Research on Women’s Health to promote research in the field.”

What You Will Find
Using the 2008 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Priorities for Women’s HealthP D F icon (482kb), health topics, research initiatives and overarching themes were identified. Within each section you will find a topic with links to resources which were selected based upon their relevance and authority for the specific topic. Some links will direct you to web sites created by or in partnership with the National Library of Medicine and some links will direct you preformatted searches created by the National Library of Medicine using PubMed. This site is a work in progress and new reports and efforts will be added as they become available.

Types of Resources
The National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, specializes in the collection, organization and dissemination of authoritative and accurate medical information. All of the resources used in this site were created by or in partnership with the National Library of Medicine.

Below are the descriptions of the NLM databases:

ClinicalTrials.gov
ClinicalTrials.gov provides regularly updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research in human volunteers. ClinicalTrials.gov gives you information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details. The information provided on ClinicalTrials.gov should be used in conjunction with advice from health care professionals.

Household Products Database
This database links over 7,000 consumer brands to health effects from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by manufacturers and allows scientists and consumers to research products based on chemical ingredients.

LactMed
LactMed, part of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®), is a database of drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. It includes information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant. Statements of the American Academy of Pediatrics concerning a drug’s compatibility with breastfeeding are provided, as are suggested therapeutic alternatives to those drugs where appropriate. All data are derived from the scientific literature and fully referenced.

MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.

NIHSeniorHealth
NIHSeniorHealth makes aging-related health information easily accessible for family members and friends seeking reliable, easy to understand online health information. This site was developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) both part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

PubMed
PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 17 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.
