Resources for Teaching History in California
About the National Archives' Pacific Region
The National Archives and Records Administration maintains two Archives in California -- one in the San Francisco Bay Area ( San Bruno) and one in southern Orange County ( Laguna Niguel). These two offices work together to preserve and make available the historical primary source documents created by Federal agencies in California. Generally, the holdings are split between the two facilities on a geographic basis. The Regional Archives in San Bruno holds documents created by Federal offices in the northern part of California, while the Regional Archives in Laguna Niguel focuses on southern California.
The Federal government has played an active role in California history, from adjudicating private land claims in the early years of statehood to the World War II-era creation and enlargement of military bases throughout the state. One of the goals of NARA's Pacific Region is to assist teachers in making the documentation of the Federal government's role here available to students.
