AHRQ Issues Summary of Evidence Report on Criteria for Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation

Press Release Date: July 17, 2000

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announces the availability of a summary of an evidence report evaluating criteria for weaning from mechanical ventilation.

AHRQ's McMaster University Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) was charged with analyzing the evidence related to weaning patients from mechanical ventilation because of the costs associated with the use of life support technology and its morbidity and mortality. A guideline based on that report is expected to be released next year by the American College of Chest Physicians, American Association for Respiratory Care and the Society for Critical Care Medicine.

The summary of Evidence Report Number 23, Criteria for Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation, is available online at http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/epcsums/mechsumm.htm. Print copies are available from the AHRQ Publications Clearinghouse by writing to P.O. Box 8547, Silver Spring, MD 20907, or calling 800-358-9295 within the U.S. or (703) 437-2078 from outside the country. Copies of the full report are expected to be available later this year.
